The Goldsboro Police Department has upped the charges on a homeless man patrol officers caught in the act of breaking into cars at the Gold City Motors car lot on east Ash Street Monday night.

Sammy Braswell, 34, streets of Goldsboro, is charged with 16 counts of felony breaking and entering and two counts of misdemeanor larceny. His bond has been set at $30,000 secured.

"He didn't get away with anything," Maj. Anthony Carmon said.

According to a press release, patrol officers witnessed Braswell entering cars on the property of Gold City Motors, a car lot located at 311 E. Ash St. Upon investigating, officers found Braswell had broken into several of the cars and removed items.

Carmon said Braswell is known to walk all over the city and is highly recognizable to both citizens and to police.

"The officer saw him and recognized him but he must have seen something out of the ordinary that made him come back around because when he did he saw (Braswell) entering the vehicle."

Braswell is scheduled to appear later today in Wayne County District Court.
