MOUNT OLIVE -- A 35-year-old Mount Olive man is in critical condition at Vidant Hospital in Greenville after he suffered a serious head injury Sunday afternoon after apparently falling off his bicycle.
Roderick Devon Leach, 218 S. Center St., was found lying in the street in the 400 Block of East Hillsboro Street just before 4 p.m. Sunday.
There is no evidence of foul play or that Leach was struck by another vehicle, Police Chief Tommy Brown said.
It appears that Leach, whose blood alcohol level was 0.31 -- nearly four times the legal limit-- fell off the bicycle and struck his head.
Brown said that an officer was near the S Mart on South Church Street when a motorist pulled over and told the officer a man was lying dead in the street.
Officers found Leach and provided medical attention until Wayne County EMS arrived.
Leach had a severe head injury, Brown said.
Leach was first taken to Wayne Memorial Hospital and then to Vidant where he is in critical condition, Brown said.
Brown said officers had spoken with some of Leach's relatives who told the offices they and Leach had been drinking earlier that afternoon.
Brown said Leach had been in the road for about 25 minutes before being discovered.
No charges have been filed.
