MOUNT OLIVE -- The 2014 Mount Olive Area Heart Walk generated $40,633 for the American Heart Association, well over its goal of $25,000, and marking the first $40,000 year ever.

Last year's event, held Oct. 18, also set a record for most participating teams, 18. Organizers and teams gathered May 6 to celebrate a record year, and to prepare for this year's walk.

Among those recognized during the luncheon, held at Ribeyes Steakhouse, included top walkers Rhonda Myers, who raised $5,000, and Elizabeth Burroughs, who raised $3,800.

Mrs. Myers is co-chairman of the walk with Stan Ricker and Peggy Hester, and she and Mrs. Burroughs also captain the Mt. Olive Pickle Co. team.

Mt. Olive Pickle was the top team, raising $16,421.

In addition to Mrs. Myers and Mrs. Burroughs, others recognized as Super Stars -- those raising $500 or more -- were Amanda Carter, Dwight Bass, Peggy VanVoltenburg and Beverly Newberne, all of the Mt. Olive Pickle Co. team, Renee Henderson of Southern Bank, and Mrs. Hester.

After the awards presentations, Mrs. Myers challenged the group to determine a goal for 2015's event, set for October 17.

Given the success of 2014, the group chose to work toward a goal of $35,000.

Those interested in participating in the 2015 Heart Walk are encouraged to contact Mrs. Myers, 919-581-3638, Ricker, 919-222-9299, or Mrs. Hester, 919-658-3081. All three are actively recruiting teams for 2015.
