MOUNT OLIVE -- Approximately 215,580 gallons of untreated waste spilled from the town's sewer system over a 13-hour period Monday.
The untreated waste entered the headwaters of the North East Cape Fear River. The spill occurred as a result of 4.92 inches of rainfall associated with Tropical Storm Ana.
The spill happened at a manhole inside the town's wastewater treatment plant at 408 Wilkins Farm Road.
The discharge was first discovered at 5:30 a.m. Monday and lasted approximately 13 hours.
House Bill 1160, which the General Assembly enacted in July 1999, requires municipalities, animal operations, industries and others who operate waste handling systems to issue news releases when a waste spill of 1,000 gallons or more reaches surface waters.
The town issued the press release this morning in accordance with that regulation.
