MOUNT OLIVE -- FFA members from across the Southeast will gather Monday at the University of Mount Olive.
Not only is the university serving as the host for the Southeast Region FFA Rally, but the institution is also providing the judges for leadership competitions. There are 31 schools and 450 FFA members and advisers projected to attend to compete, learn and serve with fellow FFA members.
The rally will be held at the new Goodson Wells facility, and the UMO FFA will be working with the N.C. Forest Service and Cliffs of the Neuse to provide for the forestry competition.
The event will include competitions that will provide students with the opportunity to develop professional skills in a variety of categories, including parliamentary procedure, creed, prepared public speaking, extemporaneous public speaking, job interview, ag mechanics, forestry, horticulture and landscape.
The winners of each competition will proceed to compete against other regional winners at the state level.
Dr. Sandra Maddox, the UMO division chair of agriculture and director of the Lois G. Britt Agribusiness Center, said she is 'thrilled" for the university to host and to participate in such a rewarding event.
"We are very excited to host the SE Regional FFA Rally here at the University of Mount Olive this year," she said. "This is an event that brings together FFA members to compete in a variety of leadership and technical competitions.
"The competition is fierce and the winners are sent on to compete with other regions at the state level. The real challenge for the day rests with who will be tasked with determining the best of the best in the various competitions. These judges are members and supporters of our agricultural community and without their willingness to serve it would make this effort very challenging."
