The Foundation of Wayne Community College has established a scholarship in memory of Ron Lane, officials announced this week.

The scholarship honors the print shop technician who was slain recently at the college.

Lane worked at the college for 18 years. He was also an alumnus, having reportedly earned three associate degrees there before joining the staff.

He died on the college campus April 13 from a single gunshot wound inflicted by a former work study student. Kenneth Stancil III, 20, was later charged with felony first-degree murder. He is currently in Wayne County Detention Center awaiting trial.

Almost immediately that week, websites sprung up online soliciting donations for the family. None of them were authorized by Lane's family, however, said Tara Humphries, public information officer at WCC.

Don Magoon, chief of administrative services, sent out an e-mail April 15 to staff and employees, alerting them to the situation.

"Please be advised that a memorial fund established online at this URL address, https://mymfunding.com/campaign/MemoryofRonLane requesting donations in memory of Ron Lane is not the official memorial sanctioned by Wayne Community College or Ron Lane's brother or sister," he wrote. "Please be advised that a memorial fund is in the process of being established through the Foundation of Wayne Community College Inc. Please contact the Foundation office for details."

Contributions to the Foundation scholarship fund can be made in person on the college's main campus in Goldsboro, located in Room 102 or 105 of the Dogwood Building. They can also be mailed to P.O. Box 8002, Goldsboro, N.C. 27533-8002 or submitted online at www.waynecc.edu/foundation/ through the "Donate Now" link on the left side of the page.

Meanwhile, a "celebration of life" ceremony that was being planned for later in the week after Lane's death and then postponed, will not be rescheduled, Ms. Humphries said.

"There are no plans for a memorial service. The college held a reflection event last week," she said via email.
