Man leaves ID at scene; charged in check forgery

A Goldsboro man already jailed on unrelated charges now faces forgery charges after police discovered he left his photo identification at the scene of the crime.

David Earl McCullen, 51, 801 Herring Road, is charged with possession of a counterfeit instrument, uttering a forged instrument and attempted obtaining property by false pretense.

The charges are related to an incident first-reported Jan. 11 at Carlie C's IGA grocery store in Goldsboro. According to the report, a man attempted cash a check valued at $385.47 at the store, but he became visibly nervous and fled when the clerk tried to determine the validity of the check.

The man left the check at the scene along with his N.C. Department of Motor Vehicles- issued ID card, the report said.

After being interviewed and charged, McCullen was placed back in the he Wayne County Jail and given a new $10,000 secured bond. He is due for a first appearance in Wayne County Superior Court later today.
