The Wayne County Board of Education accepted a change order request for the sanitation system at Spring Creek and Grantham middle schools this morning, that will ultimately incur no present or future costs to the district.

The special called meeting lasted less than 10 minutes, and the request will now go to the county commission for a similar vote on Tuesday.

Interim Superintendent Dr. Sandra McCullen said she met last week with School Board Chairman Chris West along with Commission Chairman Wayne Aycock and County Manager George Wood to discuss options on the sewer system and wet wells at both schools, which the commission had earlier committed it would fund.

"It's my understanding that the Southeastern Wayne Water District will be owning this hookup when it's completed so it's not something that we'll be funding over the years," she said.

The required vote by the board was necessitated by "spec changes," West said.

Later in the week, the board received information from the county about the engineering proposal and additional funds needed to complete the project -- $89,210 for Spring Creek and $68,775 for Grantham.

Board member Eddie Radford asked whether there would be any costs incurred to the district for the sanitation system.

"No," replied West. "The county accepted full responsibility. This is no cost to the schools."

The commission is slated to vote on this at its Tuesday meeting and the project will continue without creating any delays, Mrs. McCullen said.

"It's my understanding that they can get this done in three weeks," she said, allowing the district to continue plans for the schools to open in August.

"We need to keep it on schedule so we can make sure the schools open on time," West said.

Board member Jennifer Strickland made a motion to accept the change order request, which was seconded by board member Pat Burden.

The board unanimously approved it, with the exception of Dr. Dwight Cannon, who was absent.
