Arrest made in shooting at city store

Investigators with the Goldsboro Police Department have a suspect in custody in connection with a Monday morning shooting outside the Beestown Grocery Store at 901 S. Slocumb St..

The shots were fired from the 900 block of Wilmington Avenue where that roadway intersects with South Slocumb Street at 9:07 a.m, according to the police report.

Todd Coley, 36, 206 Daisy St., is charged with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, carrying a concealed weapon and possession of a stolen firearm. He is being held in the Wayne County Detention Center under a $131,000 secured bond.

Coley was arrested at 3:30 a.m. today at the Irish Inn Motel at 1104 Sunburst Drive, according to a press release.

The Goldsboro Fire Department and Wayne County EMS responded to shooting along with police, who taped off an area of Wilmington Avenue and the parking lot of the convenience store. At least one shell casing was located in the street.

Police at the scene said the victim, later identified as Corey Barnett, 44, of Olivia Lane, ran inside the store after being shot in the back.

Barnett was transported to Wayne Memorial Hospital where he was treated for his injuries.

Investigators were assigned to the case and developed Coley as a suspect. Coley is due to appear in Wayne County District Court later today.
