The Goldsboro Police Department announced at a press conference earlier today that the murder of Wayne Community College employee Ron Lane, 44, is being investigated as a hate crime.
Lane was killed on the college campus Monday when a former student entered the college print shop and fired a single blast from a pump shot gun, then fled.
Kenneth Morgan Stancil III, 20, is being held in a Florida jail after he was arrested by Volusia County Beach Patrol officers early this morning for sleeping on a beach in Daytona Beach, Fla.
Goldsboro Police Department Investigator Sgt. Jeremy Sutton said Stancil will be extradited within the next day or two to Wayne County for prosecution on an open count of murder.
Neither Sutton nor Goldsboro Police Chief Jeff Stewart would elaborate on the nature of hate crime the murder is being investigated as.
Wayne County Sheriff Larry Pierce commended the federal, state and local law enforcement agencies that responded to Wayne Community College Monday in response to what was believed at the time to be an active shooter scenario. He also thanked the many agencies from the surrounding area that offered assistance.
A detailed story will be available in the Wednesday edition of the Goldsboro News-Argus.
