Mary Beth Taylor paused beneath the Plonk Memorial Clock -- a landmark nestled in the center of the Wayne Community College campus.

She held a candle in her hands -- then, placed it on the bricks at the base of the clock.

"It seemed fitting to bring it here," she said.

She left the candle, which she made at Sunday school, in honor of Ron Lane, the WCC employee shot to death Monday inside the college's print shop.

Lane, she said, attended Southern Wayne High School with her.

"He was a really nice guy," she said.

WCC students, staff and members of the public are invited to leave memorial gifts in Lane's memory.

Laura Skinner, who has worked at the school for four years, paused this morning to place an angel and a bouquet of flowers on the bricks.

She said she only knew Lane through the print shop, but expressed her sorrow -- and said she spent Monday morning at the Ray of Hope Church, having rerouted after getting a text about the lockdown at WCC.

"Once we knew they were safe, we left," she said.

She had mixed emotions about returning to campus this morning, but said she felt safe.

"We have excellent officers," she said. "It was an isolated event. It wasn't anyone's fault."
