Students from New Independence Academy will be rocking it this weekend.

The school for children diagnosed with high functioning autism, housed at Rosewood Worship Center, will host its second annual "Game On Rock-A-Thon" at the school on Saturday from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m.

The event will feature parents, students and community partners in rocking chairs or playing video games for pledges, its director, Kelly Alves, said.

"It's our biggest fundraiser of the year," she said. "We do it in April because April is Autism Awareness Month so it ties in with that."

The festivities also include food and live entertainment, exhibitions, a silent auction and demonstrations.

New Independence is a K-12 private school that works to support students with high functioning autism and other developmental disorders, by providing an environment where they can thrive and succeed in their daily school routines.

Sponsorships from businesses or individuals are also being sought, as well as donations for the silent auction, Mrs. Alves said. Admission is free.

"We would love to invite the community. It's definitely a community event," she said. "We would love to have as many people out as possible to see the school, meet the kids and have a fun day with us."
