Goldsboro native promoted to NCHP lieutenant colonel

Lt. Col. Robert West

A Goldsboro native has been promoted by the N.C. State Highway Patrol to the rank of lieutenant colonel, making him the patrol's third in command. He will be stationed in the commander's office based in Raleigh.

Lt. Col. Robert "Bobby" West has served on the state highway patrol since 1988, when he was first assigned to Troop B, District 6 in Shallotte.

He was promoted to sergeant in 1998 and assigned to Wake County as a field supervisor, where he remained until he was promoted to first sergeant in 2002 and assigned to Craven County.

In 2006, he was promoted to lieutenant and assigned to the patrol's research and planning division in Raleigh.

He later transferred to accreditation, Troop C headquarters, and then to Troop A headquarters in Greenville.

In 2009, he was promoted to captain and assigned to the technical services unit in Raleigh. Four years later, he earned the rank of major and was assigned to highway patrol headquarters, where he served over support services and later transferred to field operations.

West is a 1982 graduate of Charles B. Aycock High School. He attended Wilson County Technical Institute, where he received an associate degree in law enforcement technology and earned a bachelor of science degree in criminal justice from N.C. Wesleyan College. He is also a graduate of the Administrative Officers Management Program at N.C. State University.

A member of the First Baptist Church in New Bern, he and his wife, Bonnie, have one daughter, Morgan.
