MOUNT OLIVE -- Mt. Olive Pickle Co. officials Tuesday afternoon said that continued strong sales growth is behind the company's decision to purchase the 55,000-square-foot shell building in the Mount Olive Industrial Park.

Wayne County commissioners Tuesday morning approved the sale of the building and 10.22 acres of land to the company for $650,000.

The company will probably have to spend another $900,000 to finish out the building that it will use for warehouse space, County Manager George Wood said.

"Our sales are such that we need additional warehouse space even though we added to our distribution center less than five years ago," said Lynn William, public relations director for Mt. Olive Pickle Co. "The beauty of the shell building is that it gives us a building with a fairly quick turnaround to meet our needs."

The building could be ready in September or October, she said.

The shell building is located on the Old Mount Olive Highway just north of the company's distribution center. The company will continue to ship from the distribution center, she said.

Wayne County Development Alliance President Crystal Gettys called the sale a "win-win" for the county and the pickle company.
