LAGRANGE -- An unknown black man robbed the BB&T at 104 E. Washington St. in LaGrange Friday morning and was nearly nabbed by members of the Lenoir County Sheriff's Office, who arrived at the scene 30 seconds after the 911 call was made.
Deputies were dispatched at 9:37 a.m., but by the time they arrived at the bank, the man had fled on foot toward U.S. Highway 70 with an undetermined sum of money after he used a taser gun on a bank clerk.
Sheriff Chris Hill said that the clerk was not injured and was not taken to the hospital.
The suspect is described as a black male, dressed in a black hoodie, black jeans, and black Nike tennis shoes.
He was last seen carrying a camouflage backpack and wearing a camouflage bandana over his face.
"People need to be aware that this happened in LaGrange -- in a small, quiet community -- and they need to let us know if they hear or see anything," Hill said.
Hill cautioned citizens not to approach the suspect if they spot him, but instead, to call the sheriff's office at 1-252-559-6118.
"He may be difficult to identify since he had his face covered," Hill said. "We're unsure of his whereabouts and don't know if he hopped in a car after fleeing on foot, but there are a lot of boots on the ground looking for him."
