Two residents and a pet got out safely Monday morning when a fire destroyed most of the kitchen and dining room area of a home at 1006 Sleepy Creek Road.

The call came in soon after 9 a.m.

Dudley Assistant Fire Chief Chris Pearsall said firefighters arrived on scene within four minutes of receiving the call at the single-story home. The fire was out within 10 minutes.

"The kitchen and dining area suffered heavy fire damage," he said.

The rest of the home suffered heavy smoke damage.

"The water damage is contained mostly to the kitchen area as well," Pearsall added.

Homeowner Mike Jones said he built the home himself 25 years ago.

His clothes and property all suffered heavy smoke damage, Dudley Fire Chief Don Garner told him.

Jones said he had been boiling some eggs and walked away from the stove for only two minutes.

"There was a pot of grease on the back of the stove with a lid on it. I was in the back when I heard a pop," he said.

Jones rushed back to the kitchen and found the fire spreading quickly.

"The whole kitchen was black with rolling smoke in two minutes," Jones said. "It was too big for me to handle."

He and his daughter, who had been sleeping at the time, got out and called 911, and the Dudley, Indian Springs and Arrington volunteer fire departments all responded, as did Wayne County EMS Station 8.

It will be up to the insurance company to assess the value of the damage, Garner said. He suggested Jones contact the Red Cross for assistance.

Jones estimated the value of his house at $130,000.
