As Halloween approaches, officials from Goldsboro and Wayne County said they will be keeping a close eye on the events set to unfold Friday.
And local lawmen, who have set a 6 to 8 p.m. trick-or-treat time, are urging parents to ensure their children are safe as they make their way from house to house.
The following tips are being offered by Goldsboro police Chief Jeff Stewart and Wayne County Sheriff Larry Pierce:
* If you would like trick-or-treaters to come to your house, leave your front lights on. Cut them off if you would like trick-or-treaters to skip your house.
* Trick-or-treaters should wear bright clothing. "Even glow sticks are good. You can walk around with those and make yourself visible," Stewart said.
* Stewart asked people to stay out of the streets and high-traffic areas.
* Pierce said to make sure to watch for children darting out from between parked cars, and to enter and exit driveways carefully.
* Pierce reminded parents to plan trick-or-treating routes ahead of time and to check the registered sex offender list at sexoffender.ncdoj.gov to ensure a safe route.
