The local Security Forces Association is giving back this weekend, as it hosts the Running to "Stop" Hunger 5K and 10K Saturday.

Money raised during the event will go to the Community Soup Kitchen of Goldsboro.

Event coordinator Nancy Dellick said the group wanted to give back to the community for some time.

"Who better to give back to?" she said.

Many members of the organization are Seymour Johnson Air Force Base airman who volunteer at the soup kitchen.

The 10K kicks off at 9 a.m. at Wayne Community College and costs $35.

Registration is ongoing and will be until 8:45 the morning of the race.

The 5K will begin at 9:15 a.m and costs $30.

A one-mile "fun run" will begin at 10:15 a.m.

Children participating in the one-mile run are encouraged to come in costume.

Both races will be timed with prizes going to the top male and female in each race. However, participants are more than welcome to walk as well.

Mrs. Dellick said there is a slight hill on the backside of the run.

"It's a good little run," she said.

The trail will go through the college campus and into the backside of Wayne Memorial Hospital -- the majority of the race will not be on main roads, helping keep the runners safe.

Mayor Al King will present the opening remarks and Miss Goldsboro Beth Stovall will sing the National Anthem.

Mrs. Dellick said 100 people have already registered.

The organization originally set a goal of $5,000, but members hope the race will become an annual event.

Those who would like to support the cause without running are invited to just stop by and watch.

Monetary and food donations will be taken at the race site. The soup kitchen serves up to 200 meals per day.
