Seymour Johnson Air Force Base airmen took care of dynamite found in a home on Pinkney Road Saturday afternoon.
The explosives, found by the homeowner while cleaning a freezer, were detonated by Seymour Johnson Explosive Ordnance Disposal units around 3 p.m., Wayne County Sheriff Larry Pierce said.
"The homeowner had just bought the house and was cleaning it out when he found the dynamite in the freezer," Pierce said. "When he got it outside, he could tell what it was and called the Nahunta fire chief."
Pierce said that the Nahunta Volunteer Fire Department arrived on the scene around 10 a.m. and proceeded to call in other authorities to assess the situation.
"The dynamite was taken to a safe location and buried and detonated," Pierce said.
