Bill Travis shows off his red, white and blue beard -- dyed just in time for this weekend's Fourth of July celebration.

Some people set off fireworks. Some people fly flags. Some people drink Budwesier out of cans decorated with American flags.

Others dye their beards.

Bill Travis wanted to show his patriotism in an unconventional manner, which led him to dye his beard red, white and blue.

"My son told me I should come up with something weird to do for the Fourth," Travis said. "I told him I thought I'd dye my beard. He bet me I wouldn't do it. And here we are. I already had the white part since I'm old."

Travis is 73, and has lived in Goldsboro since 1957 after moving around the country when he was a child. He said it took him approximately an hour to get the colors correct and separation just right in the dye.

"I just wish more people were patriotic," he said. "My whole family is made of veterans, and I'm the only one who didn't serve, so I really wanted to do something to show patriotism."
