Red Cross sets date for 'Ride for the Red'

The Wayne County Chapter of the American Red Cross will hold a community day May 31 from 1 until 6 p.m. The free event will be held at Wayne Community College.
The college will also be the starting point for the Ride for the Red motorcycle fundraiser ride that day.
Fire departments, first responders and law enforcement agencies will have equipment on display and will also give demonstrations.
There will be a variety of music of two stages.
For the children, there will be inflatables, face painting and rock climbing.
Several community groups will have information booths set up.
Plans are also being made for a vintage car show and motorcycle display at the community day.
The Red Cross will have educational stations set up and will also conduct a blood drive.
Craftsmen and businesses that would like to sell their products or services may have a spot at community day for a $25 donation. Nonprofits and civic and fraternal organizations that would like to participate may do so at no charge as long as they don't sell any items. Participants must take their own tent, tables and chairs.
Set up will be from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. To reserve a spot, contact Celia James at celiajames408@gmail.com.
Registration for the Ride for the Red will be held at the college from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. It will start at 1 p.m. on a 75-mile route around the county, returning to the college at 3 p.m.
Cost is $20 for riders and $10 for co-riders. Participants will receive lunch and a T-shirt, and will have the opportunity to win prizes. For more information, call Glenn Barnes at 919-921-0863.
The ride is a major fundraiser for the local Red Cross. Proceeds will be used to help single-family fire victims.
"This is an opportunity for our community to come out for fun, food, music and information not only about the Red Cross' services, but also about other local organizations," said Red Cross director Tammy Forrester.
Board chairman Jimmy Bryant said the Red Cross considers the event a gift to the county.
