Students from nine schools will participate in the Wayne County Public Schools 28th annual Middle School Battle of the Books on Friday.
The event is a quiz bowl-style competition that encourages reading. Contestants in grades 6-8 must read 27 books chosen by a statewide committee, and are tested on their comprehension of the books.
"These teams have been preparing for months, under the guidance of their school's media coordinator," said David Lewis, executive director for information/ technology services. "In addition to reading the competition selections, students have worked to sharpen their reading comprehension skills through team discussions of the books, reading quizzes and practice competitions."
Schools represented this year include Dillard, Eastern Wayne, Grantham, Greenwood, Mount Olive, Norwayne and Rosewood middle schools, Spring Creek High and Wayne School of Engineering.
The event begins at 9 a.m. at the H.V. Brown Center, 801 Poplar St.
