The newspaper's staff earned first place in the "Best Community Coverage" category, which recognizes a publication that proves, through its content, that it puts its community first.

The centerpiece of the winning editions was "Missed Direction," a series written and researched by Assistant Editor Kenneth Fine and staff writer John Joyce about the uptick in gun violence in the city, those at the center of it and the people trying to put an end to the many funerals that have unfolded in recent years.

But that was not the only honor the News-Argus brought home to Goldsboro.

Fine and photographer Casey Mozingo also brought awards back to Wayne County.

This year's winners, judges said, stood out among thousands of entries that made up one of the biggest journalism contests in the nation.

Among them were:

* "Knockout," first place, Feature Section Design: In this layout, Assistant Editor Kenneth Fine unwrapped, through photographs and storytelling, just what makes members of the Sweeney Martial Arts dojo champions time and time again.

* "Inside the ropes," third place, Sports Feature Photography: With a single photograph, photographer Casey Mozingo told the judges the story of one of the boys who trains inside the Ashford Boxing Gym.
