Murder charge filed in beating

The Goldsboro Police Department made an arrest Thursday in the case of the man found beaten in his home a day earlier. Eight hours later, the charges were upgraded to murder.

Robert Lee Davis, 62, was found beaten in his home at 902 Newsome St. at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday by fellow resident Mac Bizzell, 39.

Davis was slumped over in a chair, bloodied and with lacerations to his head, injuries received from an unknown blunt object, according to the report.

Goldsboro police and Wayne County EMS responded and transported Davis to Wayne Memorial Hospital.

Through the course of their investigation, police identified Davis' nephew, Taurus Ryshaun Davis, 36, as a suspect in the assault.

Taurus Davis, also a resident of 902 Newsome St., was located just after 10 a.m. Thursday at 607 S. Slocumb St., and taken into custody.

In his possession was a wooden club.

Police initially charged Davis with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury and placed him in the Wayne County Jail under a $150,000 secured bond.

Robert Lee Davis died at 2:49 p.m. Thursday at Vidant Medical Center in Greenville, according to a GPD press release.

Less than four hours later, investigators upgraded the charge against Taurus Davis to an open count of murder.

He is now held without bond pending an appearance Monday in Wayne County District Court.
