Fremont officers find drugs, guns in car

FREMONT -- Fremont police officers recovered illegal drugs and a stolen handgun Thursday while executing a search warrant on a vehicle in the 800 block of Martin Street.
Police recovered 30.7 grams of crack cocaine, 13 bags of high quality marijuana, 40 bags of marijuana packaged for sale and 71 grams of marijuana in a gallon re-sealable bag as well as a stolen Ruger SR9C 9mm handgun, Fremont police Chief Paul Moats Jr. said.
The drugs have a total street value of about $2,300.
"This was a really good bust for us," Moats said.
Police officers received information that the 2000 Lincoln LS 4Dr would have drugs and a firearm in the trunk Thursday and went out to investigate.
After locating the vehicle, Deputy M. Mcalduff with the Wayne County Sheriff's Office and his K-9 "Shelly" were called out to sniff for drugs.
Shelly alerted for the presence of narcotics in the vehicle and a search warrant was obtained.
The warrant was written and executed on the car, turning up the drugs and handgun in the trunk.
The vehicle in question has no tags, but officers were able to determine its owner, Moats said.
Charges are pending upon completion of the investigation, but the department has a good suspect in this case.
Pending charges include Level 1 trafficking in cocaine, possession with intent to sell or distribute cocaine; felony possession of marijuana; possession with intent to sell or distribute marijuana; possession of a stolen firearm; and maintaining a vehicle for a controlled substance.
"This is a major dent in Fremont's fight against drugs in the community" Moats said. "The officers did a great job following up on the information."
In the past two years, Fremont's crime rate has dropped off significantly thanks to more proactive police work, Moats said.
"Right now Fremont is warrant-free," he said. "We get a warrant and we go ahead and get out there and put it through. We are working to continue these low numbers we were seeing from 2012."
