Sheriff Carey Winders as he awaited election returns during his last re-election in 2010.

Some wanted to post something, but couldn't bring themselves to write more than a few words. Others shared quite a bit about the man they knew -- and loved.

The following is a selection of the comments that have appeared on the News-Argus Facebook page in the hours since Wayne County Sheriff Carey Winders passed:

"So sad." -- Donna Milford Whitehurst

"Carey had the best sense of humor of anybody. He has Heaven laughing right now!" -- Carl Lewis Jr.

"No words." -- Tammy Starling Wingate

"We have lost a true friend & the best sheriff in my time in Wayne County." -- Linda Marie Linton Drohan

"Wayne County has lost a true soldier against crime." -- Patricia Newman Wilson

"Wayne County really took a loss today. The world was a little bit better with him in it." -- Kylie Marie Summerling

"Prayers for the family. Sad day for Wayne County. He was one of the good guys." -- Kim Stricklin Alphin

"Carey was always willing to help. He set a fine example of what a leader is and does. Wayne County is broken hearted. My heart goes out to his family. We lift you all up in prayer." -- Steve Moore

"He loved telling a story and getting you to believe and then he would laugh out loud when he had convinced you that it was true, but it was really just a tall tale. A friend/brother and servant of the people that will be greatly missed." -- Efton Sager
