Wayne Memorial honors 10 employees

Ten employees were honored Tuesday night at Wayne Memorial Hospital's annual recognition of its excellent nurses, nursing assistants, technicians and surgical staff.

The 10 were chosen from among 32 employees nominated by supervisors, co-workers and peers. Final selections were made by three outside judges who scored the nominations based on integrity, honesty, accountability, character, enthusiasm, caring, compassion and competency.

Hospital President and CEO Bill Paugh and Vice President of Patient Services and Chief Nursing Officer Shirley Harkey presented the awards.

This year's winners are:

*Marc Alphin, RN, a graduate of Wayne Community College and a nurse for 12 years, six of those at Wayne Memorial Hospital. He works in the hospital's surgery center.

*Pam Anderson, RN, BSN, has been a nurse for 26 years, 20 of those at WMH. She is a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and is the hospital's Manager of School Health Services.

*Toni Bland, RN, MSN, a graduate of Johnston Community College and Walden University, has been a nurse for 17 years, 15 of those at WMH. She is Director of Nursing Services for the hospital's telemetry unit.

*Arlene Cook, Hyperbaric Oxygen Technician in the hospital's Wound Care Center, is a graduate of Fayetteville Technical Institute. She has worked at WMH for 25 years, first as a physical therapy assistant and later in her current role as an HBO Tech.

*Megan Gay, an RN for nine years, has been with WMH for six. She is a nurse in the Operating Room and is a graduate of Sharon Regional Health System School of Nursing.

*Tomika Glaspie, RN, has worked at Wayne Memorial for almost 17 years. She is a graduate of WCC and works on the hospital's oncology floor.

*Helen Gonzales is a graduate of WCC and has worked at WMH for five years. She is a unit secretary and nurse assistant on the oncology floor and has been a certified nursing assistant for 12 years.

*Linwood Kornegay, RN, BSN, is a graduate of East Carolina University and has been a nurse for 12 years, all at Wayne Memorial. He is a school health nurse.

*Shannon Reid, RN, BSN, a graduate of Georgia College & State University, has been a nurse for eight years, five of those at WMH. She is the Clinical Diabetes Educator in the hospital's Center for Nutrition and Diabetes Health.

*Kellie Witherington, RN, BSN, is a graduate of ECU. She has been an RN for 13 years, 10 of those at WMH. She works in Employee Health.

Each of the winners received an acrylic, flame-shaped award symbolizing Florence Nightingale, who was known for carrying an oil lamp at night as she made her rounds tending to wounded soldiers during the Crimean War.

The guest speaker was Dr. Kristin Swanson, RN, Ph.D., Fellow of the American Academy of Nursing, Dean and Alumni Distinguished Professor at the UNC-Chapel Hill School of Nursing.
