DAR is sponsoring two essay contests

The David Williams Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution is sponsoring two contests for school-age children.

The American History Essay Contest is open to students in grades 5 through in private, public or parochial schools and homeschoolers.

This year, students are asked to pretend they are a boy or girl during the colonial fight for freedom, and using historical facts, discuss how the war affects their lives. They are to describe some of the changes that are taking place in their lives and the lives of their families as they face this new situation.

Essays must be between 300 and 600 words for grade 5 and 600 to 1,000 words for grades 6 through 8. It may be handwritten in black ink, types or prepared on a computer or word processor, using black type in a nonscript font no smaller than 12 point and no larger than 14 point.

The entrant's full name and address, phone number with area code, name of school with grade level, name of the David Williams Chapter and number of words in entry must be included.

For the Christopher Columbus Essay Contest, students are asked to discuss the similarities and differences between the ways in which Christopher Columbus and George Washington dealt with, and overcame, the challenges and adversities they faced and what Americans can apply to their own lives from the experiences of these two men.

It's open to students in grades 9 through 12 in public, private or parochial schools and homeschoolers.

The essay must be between 800 and 1,200 words, typed or prepared on a computer or word processor using black type in a nonscript font no smaller than 12 point and no larger than 14 point.

Information to be included with the essay is contestant's full name, address, phone number with area code, name of school and grade level, the David Williams Chapter and number of words.

Deadline for entering either essay contest is Nov. 1.
