Murder attempt ends in an arrest

Thanks in large part to a tip provided to Crime Stoppers, Goldsboro resident Jerry Aundrey Parks, 39, was taken into police custody Wednesday, less than two weeks after he allegedly beat another man nearly to death with a claw hammer.
Officers from the Goldsboro Police Department's C-shift and warrants division found Parks hiding in the closet of a residence at 910 Fifth St.
Parks, of 912 N. John St., is charged with attempted first-degree murder for the brutal assault investigators say he inflicted on 36-year-old Leodis Hamlin Jr. on July 27 in the 900 block of North John Street.
Hamlin, of 207 Pearson St., was found unconscious by Goldsboro police officers responding to the area to investigate reports of an assault.
A witness told police that Parks and Hamlin had an altercation, and that Parks returned with a claw hammer and struck Hamlin once in the face and then again in the head with the tool.
Parks then allegedly stomped several times on Hamlin's head while he was on the ground.
Hamlin was flown to Vidant Medical Center, where no further information was released about his condition.
He has since been released from the hospital, according to a Goldsboro Police Department press release issued today.
Parks is currently being held without bond in the Wayne County Jail and is scheduled for a first appearance today in Wayne County District Court.
