County to hold hearing on incentives

Wayne County commissioners next month will hold a public hearing on possible financial incentives for a yet to be disclosed business.
Commissioners announced the July 2 hearing following Tuesday morning following a 20-minute closed session called to discuss the location or expansion of a business or industry in the county. Wayne County Development Alliance Vice President Mike Haney attended the meeting as well.
The public hearing will be held at 5:15 p.m. in the commissioners' meeting room on the fourth floor of the county courthouse annex.
The board took no action after returning to open session, but later in the morning scheduled the hearing.
Commissioner Ray Mayo made the motion to hold the hearing to "consider providing incentives to an industry to locate or expand in Wayne County."
"The nature of the incentives to be considered will be a payback (refund) of a portion of new property taxes paid on new investments," Mayo said. "The partial payback will be for five years."
The motion was unanimously approved.
Wayne County Manager Lee Smith told Mayo that he knew the question would be asked about the identity of the business.
"We are not giving the name of the company because of another pending state issue of announcement and we do not want to preclude that grant opportunity for this company," Smith said. "The company name will be given prior to the public hearing."
