Duplin teachers named Kenan Fellows

Five Duplin County teachers have been named 2013-14 Kenan Fellows. They will tackle summer research projects in a variety of fields including curriculum design, renewable energy, healthcare, pharmaceuticals and agriculture.

* Ben Littell, a science teacher at North Duplin Jr.-Sr. High School, will partner with researchers at Williamsdale Field Laboratory to explore the connection between plant science and bio-fuel innovation.

* Anne Pittman, a science teacher at Duplin Early College High School, will partner with leaders at Vidant Duplin Hospital to examine STEM-related opportunities for students in health care.

* Mary Williams teaches math at East Duplin High School. She will shadow experts at Murphy-Brown, the livestock production subsidiary of Smithfield Foods.

* Mendy Marcin teaches social studies at James Kenan High School. She will partner with experts at Duplin Winery to examine STEM-related opportunities for students in wine making and agritourism.

* Amy Powers is an English teacher at Wallace Rose Hill High School. Her project is supported by North Carolina New Schools.
