Wayne County Public Schools will hold its kindergarten registration day on Friday at all 15 elementary schools. Registration will last from 8:30 a.m. until 3 p.m., with the exception of Spring Creek Elementary, whose event will run from 9 a.m. until 3:30 p.m.
A child must be 5 years old on or before Aug. 31 to register for kindergarten for next year. Parents/legal guardians must present an official birth certificate and immunization records to school officials. Birth certificates may be obtained from the Register of Deeds office in the county of the child's birth.
Parents/guardians must also show "proof of residence." To enroll a child, parents must present two sources of documentation such as utility bills, tax bills, deed of trust, rent receipt, or any document that proves current resident status. Military families living on base may present a letter from base housing as proof of residence. Parents must enroll their kindergarten child in the school district in which they live, and school assignments are made by the local school system.
State law requires that each kindergarten child receive a health assessment and his/her shots. The health assessment must be documented on an official North Carolina Health Assessment Report form, which is available through the school district, the Wayne County Health Department, and most pediatricians' offices. If needed, parents/legal guardians will be given a health assessment form during registration which must be completed by the family physician and returned to the school by the first day of classes, Monday, Aug. 26.

Anyone unable to register their child on the designated day should contact the school as soon as possible, call the district administrative offices at 919-731-5900 or stop by the administrative offices at 2001 E. Royall Ave.
Transfer requests will be accepted during the month of June for schools that have space available. A list of those with openings will be made public.
Current kindergarten students will not attend school on Friday, which will count as a vacation day for these students.
