With the old bridge closed since Sept. 25, 2012, the new span on U.S. 70 Business/West Market Street over the Neuse River in Smithfield is now open. State Department of Transportation officials and the Downtown Smithfield Development Corp. officially opened the bridge Wednesday.

Some work is left to be done, but officials say that none of it should necessitate closing the entire bridge. Some lane closures will occur though. Projects left to be done are replanting vegetation, repaving a section of the Smithfield Neuse Riverwalk and completing the outside rails of the bridge to allow bicycle and pedestrian traffic to use the 6-foot wide walkway on the north side and the 10-foot wide walkway on the south side.

The work to replace the 89-year-old bridge is being done by D.H. Griffin Construction Co. of Raleigh. It is a $5.3 million project.
