The Wayne County chapter of the American Red Cross will host a Heroes on the Court fundraiser Wednesday at 7 p.m. at Wayne Country Day School gymnasium.

It will feature one-man volleyball team Bob Holmes.

"He's a motivational speaker who will tell you how he beat the odds and how you can beat the odds," said Tammy Forrester, interim director of the Wayne County Red Cross. "He will also tell you how the Red Cross helps people beat the odds."

Mrs. Forrester said multiple volleyball teams will challenge Holmes that night, including Wayne Country Day School and Goldsboro Junior Woman's Club team of nine women.

"And we're trying to get a public safety team," Mrs. Forrester said. "It will cover EMS, fire and rescue and police. And we're going to go through the school system and get an all-star team with some of the public school system students. There will also be a Wayne County celebrity team with Bill Johnston from Curtis Media, Julie Daniels from BB&T and others."

The games will be short.

The event is free. Concessions will be available. Tickets will be on sale for a drawing for a volleyball autographed by Holmes, a date night that includes dinner for two and a movie and other prizes for couples and families. Proceeds will benefit the Red Cross.

"It's a great family event," Mrs. Forrester said. "We hope people will come out. In the past we've had our sports memorabilia auction and this year we wanted to do some new things. We wanted to something fresh and out of the box."
