The annual Elementary Battle of the Books was held this year at Goldsboro High School, in two parts.

Nine teams competed on March 20 and seven on March 26.

The long-running event was taken over by Wayne County Public Library in 2007, said Nicolle Robbins, head of children's services.

Students are given a list of recommended books to read, in anticipation of the quiz bowl-type contest.

Each participant received a certificate and the winning team of each day received individual trophies.

Competing schools in the first round of competition included Brogden Primary, Carver, Eastern Wayne, Fremont STARS, North Drive, Northeast and Tommy's Road elementary schools, and Dillard and Greenwood middle schools.

The Greenwood Middle team won, coached by Kimberly Jordan and Wendy Hair. Students on the team included Jazmin Jones, Mady Klubertanz, Jaelynn Sviglin-Krell, Ben Sporysz and Abby Vazquez,

On the second day of the contest, schools represented included Carver Heights, Grantham, Meadow Lane, Northwest, Rosewood and Spring Creek elementary schools, and Mount Olive Middle.

Spring Creek was declared the winner.

Keith Coleman and Lynn Crumpler coached the team, which consisted of Nate Daniels, Santos Lopez-Lucas, Madalyn Meagher, Joseph O'Hara, Davis Price, Zachary Salter, Jalen Staps and Sha'diamon Sutton.
