Charles B. Aycock DECA chapter does well at national meetings

Charles B. Aycock's DECA chapter recently attended the 2013 N.C. DECA Career Development Conference and had its best year ever, said adviser Tammy Vail, a marketing teacher at the school.

DECA, which stands for Distributive Clubs of America, is for students in marketing and business classes. It prepares emerging leaders and entrepreneurs in marketing, finance, hospitality and management in high schools and colleges.

Through events like the 69th annual DECA Career Development Conference, Mrs. Vail said student develop skills and competence for marketing careers, build self-esteem, experience leadership and practice community service.

Thirty students attended the state conference, held in Greensboro, several of them named state finalists.

Jenny Hussey, Sarah Crawford and Cierra Harris won first place in the Community Service Project.

Chigozie Umeofia won first place in the Entrepreneurship Participating Event.

Taylor Stewart and Austin Snowden won first place in the Financial Literacy Promotion Project.

Kristian Marlowe, Addison Vail and Maggey Taylor won second place in the Learn and Earn Project.

Kayla Newsome and Skyler Meads won fourth place in the Public Relations Project.

Kimber Pender and Avery Creech won fifth place in the Entrepreneurship Promotion Project.

Katie Johnson and Maggey Taylor won fifth place in the Buying and Merchandising Role Play.

They will be traveling to Anaheim, Calif., April 23-28, for the International Career Development Conference.

Mrs. Vail said a fundraiser is planned to raise money for the students to travel to the next round of competition.

A spring fashion show will be held April 13 at 7:30 p.m., with a spaghetti dinner preceding it from 5-7 p.m. Tickets are $6 for the dinner and $6 for the show.
