Downtown Mount Olive is crowded with people during the annual North Carolina Pickle Festival held last April. The event was recently named among the state's Top 10 attractions.

MOUNT OLIVE -- The North Carolina Pickle Festival, to the "dill-light" of its organizers, has been named one of the Top 10 Attractions in North Carolina by AmericaTheBeautiful.com.

The festival, now in its 27th year, is scheduled for April 26-27 in downtown Mount Olive.

"We are thrilled to be recognized as a Top 10 event here in North Carolina," said Julie Beck, now in her 19th year as festival chairman. "Ours is truly a community celebration, and our volunteers are the ones who really make this happen. It's an honor for all of us."

The website identified the top 10 attractions in each state, and the listings will be posted on its website throughout 2013.

"We are excited about it and think that it will give us more exposure throughout North Carolina and the nation since we will be included on the America The Beautiful website," said Lynn Williams, Mt. Olive Pickle Co. spokesman and longtime festival organizer. "It is exciting. We are looking forward to another great festival and are very excited about what we have to offer."

Tens of thousands turn out yearly to enjoy a wide range of activities, including three stages of entertainment, car, antique tractor and motorcycle shows, carnival rides and children's activities, plus exhibits, food, arts and crafts, and, of course, Mt. Olive pickles.

Highlights this year will include a naturalization ceremony welcoming new American citizens, Lizard Lick Towing's Big Juicy, and the return of the one-ring Circus Stella.

The award-winning festival, presented by the Mount Olive Area Chamber of Commerce, is held in downtown Mount Olive on the last full weekend in April each year.
