Teachers add certification to credentials

Six teachers in Wayne County Public Schools have earned status of National Board Certification, bringing the district's count of teachers and counselors with those credentials to 224. Wayne County Public Schools' pool of National Board Certified educators now has 224 teachers and counselors with the credentials.
The Board of Education on Tuesday night recognized six more teachers in the district who have earned the status.
National Board Certification is granted by the National Board of Professional Teaching Standards and is the most accepted symbol of teaching excellence in the United States.
"Earning certification is a challenging and time-consuming process," said board member Eddie Radford during the presentation. "The assessment process for National Board Certification requires candidates to complete two major components -- a portfolio of classroom practice, including samples of student work and videotapes of teacher instruction, and an assessment of content knowledge administered at a computer-based testing center.
"It is estimated that the process will take the better part of a school year and involve a total of 200 to 400 hours of work outside of the classroom."
Candidates seeking the national certification must hold a bachelor's degree, have completed three years of teaching or counseling experience and hold a valid state teaching or counseling license for that period of time.
The following were recognized at the board meeting and presented with a certificate and $500 check.
* Robin Casey, a fourth-grade teacher at Carver Elementary, who has been in education for 16 years
* Caitlin Foss, a business teacher at Southern Wayne High, in her sixth year of teaching
* Jessica Knowles-Brock, a sixth-grade language arts teacher at Mount Olive Middle School, she is in her seventh year in the profession
* Alissa Merritt, in her ninth year in education, a history/social studies/secondary social studies teacher at Eastern Wayne High
* Robin Morton, an eighth-grade math teacher at Eastern Wayne Middle, in her 16th year in education
* Alicia Stevens, a secondary mathematics teacher at Rosewood High, in her eighth year of teaching.
