In honor or memory of those fighting cancer, organizers will hold their second annual lantern release on Friday, weather permitting.

Founded in 2011, the main purpose of Southeastern Cancer Care is to assist patients in Eastern North Carolina with food, utilities, gas, clothing and other needs as they undergo treatment or are within one year of recovery. In 2012, Southeastern Cancer Care, a 501-c-3, non-profit, tax-exempt organization, distributed over $102,000.00 to patients needing help in eastern North Carolina.

"Cures for the Colors" was chosen as the trademark of Southeastern Cancer Care and each participant will have the opportunity to select the color t-shirt representing the cancer they support.

Last year, organizers said, they received overwhelming support and hope to have even more this year. People are invited to support the event as a race participant, a volunteer or as a monetary donor.
