Pecan and Genoa roads were closed early this morning due to an overturned truck near the intersection of Pecan and Mitchell roads.

A worker was struck by a tractor-trailer on Pecan Road near Mitchell Road just before 8 this morning.

The N.C. State Highway Patrol was still gathering information at press time, but said that the victim had been taken to the hospital.

The victim, identified so far only as Floyd Harris was injured from the waist down. Officials with Wayne Memorial Hospital were able to confirm that he was transported to Vidant Medical Center in Greenville, but could not comment further on his condition.

The truck driver, Marcellus Humphrey, of 809 Deblea Court in Jacksonville, was operating an 18-wheeler owned by Guy Shaver Trucking Inc. and was said to be carrying railroad ties.

According to initial reports, the truck was rounding a curve heading east on Pecan Road and passed an oncoming vehicle. Due to the road narrowing at the point the two vehicles met, the passenger tire of the big rig went off the road and onto the soft shoulder. The truck then slipped off the road and overturned, striking Harris as he was working on a cow pasture fence near the road.

The Highway Patrol has not yet said whether any charges are pending or if the driver suffered any injuries.
