Wayne Community College Continuing Education Services will provide a class to help food service workers comply with new regulations for restaurants and other food vendors.

WCC will teach the "ServSafe" Food Handler course, to prepare employees for the National Restaurant Association's Food Protection Manager Certification examination.

The new "food code rules" in North Carolina's Food Protection Standards, which will take effect Jan. 1, 2014, require that a certified food protection manager be on duty in restaurants and other facilities that receive a sanitation rating.

The course will cover basic food safety, personal hygiene, cross contamination and allergies, time and temperature, and cleaning and sanitation in classroom sessions and end with the final certification exam.

Cost is $103, which includes the exam fee. Cost of the textbook, ServeSafe Manager Book 6th Edition, is separate. It can be purchased from the college's bookstore or online at www.servsafe.com.

The course will be offered the following times:

*Saturdays: 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m., Nov. 3 and 10 and 8-10 a.m., Nov. 17; 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Dec. and 8, and 8-10 a.m., Dec. 15

*Mondays-Thursdays: 6-10:30 p.m., Nov. 12-15 and Dec. 10-13.
