Later this week, two local Boys & Girls clubs will launch "Day for Kids," which it hopes to make an annual event.
Friday will be observed as a day to foster relationships between adults and children, said Jo Heidenreich, development director for Boys & Girls Clubs of Wayne County.
"Unlike many other countries, America does not have an official day to celebrate its children," she said. "Boys & Girls Clubs of America, along with the support of other leading youth-serving organizations is working to change that by establishing a Saturday in September each year as Boys & Girls Club Day for Kids. However, we will be holding ours on Friday."
Eventually, Ms. Heidenreich said, the month of September will center around activities and a kick-off to the fall and back-to-school season.
Two of the area clubs have special events planned for Friday afternoon.
Starting at 5 p.m., the Boys & Girls Club of Northern Wayne, 405 Sycamore St. in Fremont, will feature indoor and outdoor games, including a kickball game between youth and adults, and food will be available.
The Goldsboro unit at 1401 Royall Ave. will hold its events from 4-6 p.m. and include basketball, egg races, a three-legged race, face painting, balloon races, jump rope relay and long jump.
