Flu vaccinations are available at Wayne County Health Department.

Officials said the yearly vaccination is the best way to prevent influenza, and stressed the importance of getting immunized.

Carolyn King, health education supervisor, said the vaccine is safe and effective.

While in most cases flu season occurs in the late fall, it is also prevalent in the winter and early spring. It is highly contagious, affecting more than 60 million people annually. All ages are susceptible, but it can be especially dangerous for the elderly and young children.

Getting the vaccine anytime throughout the season continues to be beneficial, Mrs. King said. Immunity received from the vaccination provides protection and as the virus changes, the vaccine is updated yearly. Other recommendations to ward off the spread of flu include diligent hand washing, covering the mouth and nose when coughing and sneezing and staying home when ill.

The flu vaccinations are being offered at the Health Department Monday through Thursday, 8 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. and 1-4:30 p.m. Appointments are not required.

There is no charge for the vaccine to any age attending college or university, including community college; those in contact with infants less than 6 months old; and any uninsured and non-Medicaid patient, 19 years and older, who will be pregnant during flu season and is being served by the local health department.

Flu vaccine will be billed for those enrolled in Medicare, Medicare HMO, Medicaid, Blue Cross Blue Shield and/or NC Health Choice. Please bring the appropriate insurance cards with you to the visit. If the policy does not cover the cost of the vaccine, the Health Department will bill the individual later.

If a child or adult has any other form of health insurance other than the accepted forms previously listed, a fee of $25 will be charged for the vaccine.

Those 65 years or older may be eligible for the high dose flu vaccine.

If you have any questions, call 919-731-1000 during office hours Monday through Thursday.
