A group of local motorcycle enthusiasts is calling on the public to help honor those who have served -- and those who currently serve -- their country.

The Goldsboro Harley Owners Group is hosting a military appreciation day Saturday at Shelton's Harley-Davidson.

But Jimmy Brown, the group's assistant director, said the bike and car show is not simply a "biker event."

"We want the community to come out and show their support ... and just say, 'Thank you,'" he said. "That's what it's about."

Registration for the bike and car shows begin at 10 a.m.

And another competition, a barbecue cook-off, will see seven teams square off -- those who attend the event can purchase a ticket for $1, taste a sampling from each team and vote.

"We really want this event to be a community event," Brown said.

So he hopes that local residents will help the group exceed the 400-person crowd that showed up last year -- that they will come out and enjoy some food and fellowship among some of the men and women who have and currently serve.

Maybe then, the scope of an event created, in part, for veterans like Brown's son, can expand.

"I really would like to see Goldsboro or the county take this event over and make it a yearly event," he said. "That is where I would love to see this thing go one day."
