"The Constitution and the American Military" will be the topic of a Constitution Day talk at Wayne Community College on Monday, Sept. 17. The event, which will be held at 7 p.m. in Moffatt Auditorium in the Wayne Learning Center (main building), is free and open to the public.

Featured speaker will be Capt. Nicole Vele, an assistant staff judge advocate at Seymour Johnson Air Force Base's 4th Fighter Wing, who holds the position of chief of general law.

Capt. Vele received her bachelor of arts degree, cum laude, from Marquette University. After graduation, she worked as a police officer for the City of Milwaukee. She also holds two master's degree and a Juris Doctor degree to practice law before the Supreme Court of Wisconsin and the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Wisconsin.

Since receiving her commission and entering active duty in October 2011, she has received several military awards and decorations, including the National Defense Service Medal and Global War on Terrorism Service Medal.

Constitution Day celebrates the signing of the U.S. Constitution on Sept. 17, 1787. Constitution and Citizenship Day educational programs are mandated by federal legislation for all educational institutions that receive federal funding.

The college will also hold a voter registration drive that day from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Atrium of the Wayne Learning Center.

The voter drive is open to members of the public who are U.S. citizens by birth or naturalization, will be at least 18 years old by the next general election, and will have been residents of North Carolina and the county in which they intend to vote for 30 days before the election. It will be conducted by the Wayne County Board of Elections.
