City election today

Turnout is expected to be low across the state for North Carolina's secondary primary election today, but Wayne County Elections Board Director Beverly York said she believes interest in the races for seats on the Goldsboro City Council could boost the number of voters going to the polls here.
Polls are open until 7:30 p.m. Voters will be casting ballots for mayor and all six seats on the council.
"What we may see is a heavier turnout in Goldsboro," Mrs. York said, noting that numbers coming in from across the county this morning were low -- the result of a secondary primary in the middle of the summer when elections are far from the minds of most voters.
Meanwhile, across the state, Democrats and Republicans will be seeking to winnow their field of candidates for a handful of Council of State races. Voters will choose Republican contenders in four races for Council of State and the winner of a Democratic primary race for Commissioner of Labor today.
Few Wayne County voters took advantage of early voting options, Mrs. York said, with 794 voters choosing to vote using the one-stop absentee ballots and 142 mailing in absentee ballots as of Monday.
Mrs. York said having a single one-stop voting location -- at the Board of Elections office -- may have contributed to the low turnout.
Results of the election will be available online after the polls close, although those results will be unofficial until verified by the Board of Elections.
