An armed robbery turned violent late Monday evening after an employee at the Dudley Food Mart fought back.
Mohammed Ali Abbas was shot after he attempted to prevent an unidentified black man from taking cash from his store.
According to a report released by the Wayne County Sheriff's Office, the suspect -- wearing black jeans and a black hooded sweatshirt -- entered the business just after 10 p.m. and brandished a handgun.
But after Abbas opened the cash drawer and lifted his arms into the air, the man set his weapon on the counter.
And that is when the victim took matters into his own hands.
He pulled out a 9 mm pistol and fired a shot, prompting a struggle that left him suffering from a gunshot wound.
The suspect fled with an undisclosed amount of cash and Abbas' pistol.
Moments later, first responders arrived at the scene of the incident and Abbas was transported to Wayne Memorial Hospital where he was treated and released.
The suspect, as of press time, was still at large.
