A Pikeville man died after being shot on Wayne Avenue early Sunday morning.

Brandon Marquett Phillips, 37, of 107 Stone Cutter Drive, died from his injuries after emergency surgery was performed at Wayne Memorial Hospital.

Police responded at about 5 a.m. Sunday to a call of shots fired in the 200 block of Wayne Avenue.

While officers were en route, a second call was received that someone had been shot at 235 Wayne Ave. and was lying in the front yard.

Upon arrival, officers found Phillips suffering from a gunshot wound.

Wayne County Emergency Medical Services took Phillips to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead about 3 p.m.

During the investigation, police identified Demarko Devon Briggs, 27, of 627 Isler St., as the alleged shooter.

Briggs was arrested at 12:38 p.m. Sunday at his mother's home in the 900 block Lincoln Drive without incident, police report.

Briggs was originally charged with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury and given a $100,000 secured bond.

After hospital officials confirmed Phillips' death, police charged Briggs with an open count of murder and placed him under no bond pending a first appearance.

Police reported the Sunday shooting as the first homicide in Goldsboro this year.
