Participants in "The Secret Garden" rehearse Wednesday.

What hidden treasures does the Secret Garden hold? Audience members will find that out when they attend the performance of "The Secret Garden" Saturday at 7 p.m. at Northwest Elementary School.

The performance is part of the Missoula Children's Theatre, a touring group out of Missoula, Mont., that goes around the United States and other countries providing a weeklong residency for children.

The purpose is to develop life skills in children through participation in the arts. Children who participate in a residency learn creativity, social skills, goal achievement, communication skills and self-esteem.

Professional tour actors and directors with Missoula take scenery, costumes, props, makeup and lighting with them, so all the community has to provide is children for the parts.

The play is "The Secret Garden," an original adaptation that will feature more than 50 local students.

Hanna West plays the role of Mary Lennox. Other students participating include Cayce Hoggard as Martha Sowerby, Kristie Johnson as Dickon Sowerby, Lindsey Daniels as Susan Sowerby, Joshua Pickle as Colin Craven, Cassie Linton as Archibald Craven, Hunter Kaler as Ayah/Bilge and rat/captain, Olivia de Araujo as Mrs. Medlock, Justin Edwards as Dr. Craven, Brandon Price as Ben Weatherstaff and Payton Watkins as Robin Redbreast.

The Bugs that Rock will be Rachel Edwards, Abbey Winders, Heather Pickle, Destiny Williams, Becca Edmondson, Abigail Ingle, Madi Stamper and Kari Beth Wood.

Canadian geese will be Katherine Strickland, Charity Williams, Deana Seif, Sarah Anderson, Josiah Simmons, Rachel Hughes, Sara McDowell and Ashton Rhodes.

Appearing as the More Folk are Corie Nicole Linton, Leslie Lippold, Paul Randolph, Sophie de Araujo, Isabella Sardina, Mei Wen Ingle, Journi Elliott and Lauren Miller.

In the secret garden itself will be Ally Price, Hunter Lippold, Mary Anderson, Joshua Linton, Drew Daniels, Destiny Wilson, Tristan Rhodes and Hailey Nunley.

Sponsoring the performance are StageStruck, Wayne County Arts Council and North Carolina Arts Council.
