New road names being considered by county board

Public comments are being accepted on proposed new names for sections of North William Street and Tommy's Road that were left as dead-end roads by the U.S. 70 Goldsboro Bypass.
Wayne County commissioners will hold a public hearing on the proposed names Tuesday at 9:15 a.m. in the commissioners' meeting room on the fourth floor of the county courthouse annex, 224 E. Walnut St.
The proposal is to rename sections of:
* North William Street from Belfast Road north approximately 315 feet to the dead end as Peanut Court
* North William Street from Belfast Road south approximately 350 feet to the dead end as O'Rourke Court
* Tommy's Road from U.S. 117 east approximately 2,900 feet to the dead end as Barden Scott Lane.
The state Department of Transportation has not yet assigned Secondary Road numbers to these roads segments.
The proposals were reviewed and approved by the county Planning Board at its Feb. 14 meeting.
The Planning Board earlier this year sent letters to property owners along those sections of road asking for suggestions. County Planner Connie Price compiled the names and offered suggestions to the Planning Board which agreed to the names.
Letters also have been mailed to the property owners advising them of the suggested names and public hearing date.
Fewer than a dozen addresses will be affected by the name changes, Price said. There are five or six households on what would become Barden Scott Lane and four on what would become Peanut Court.
There is one home on the proposed O'Rourke Court. However, the house is situated such that its address is actually Belfast Road, Price said.
It is possible that commissioners could approve the names following the public hearing if there is no opposition, Price said. If other names are suggested the county would review them to ensure there is no conflict with an existing road name, he said.
There is no rush in renaming the roads, Price said.
Once the names are assigned, the county will contact the DOT and companies like Progress Energy, Time Warner Cable and others that maintain address databases. That is when the DOT will assign a Secondary Road number.
It probably won't be the last time that the county will need to rename roads affected by the construction of the bypass, Price said. The highway project will mean new service roads that will need names as well, Price said.
"But we won't stir that pot until we need to," he said.
